debt free living

Debt free living is important to an Independence Day plan

We hear a lot of talk about freedom and independence when it comes to nations and politics, but how about our own personal freedom? Freedom from debt and the fear of serious financial problems, I mean? It is not hard to become debt free living. Start debt elimination or credit and debt counseling and you are on your way to debt free living.

It's possible to get that kind of freedom, but it's a "three step plan." Just like there are different steps in declaring independence for a nation, there are different levels for us when we declare our freedom.

If it takes awhile to move from one step to the next, it's okay because we need to get each one right before moving on.

Before you even get started, the first thing necessary is so simple that it's often overlooked. Make a commitment. Until you can do this, all the "three step programs" in the world won't help you a bit.

Step One: Become independent from consumerism. Declare your money free from having to serve every advertiser that comes along. Decide that you will no longer support big business to your own hurt.

You might think this is a big step, and in a way, it is, but it's certainly not more than you can handle. Decide that you really, really, really want to be free to live life the way you know is right for you, regardless of what advertising and propaganda tries to convince you - it IS advertising and propaganda. If it's something you really need, they don't have to try to convince you. Before you buy anything, take your time and think over whether you want it more than you want your independence.

Step Two: This day of independence comes when you have fought and won the war of freedom from consumer debt. No more credit cards, no more revolving accounts, no more car payments. No more house payments. Go ahead, have a tea party. Refuse to pay hundreds of dollars in interest. No taxation without representation? How about no interest payments without you being the payee.

What a feeling that is! Every bit of money that you earn or have, is yours. With the exception of utility bills and groceries, your money can do marvelous things when it's not already spoken for before you cash your check.

Can you really get out of debt? Mini lesson: Add up ALL your bills. Let the amount soak in. Let it scare you. Then write up a plan on paying them off. Pay off the ones that cost you less in interest (actual dollars and cents) first. Pay as much extra on them as you can, even if it's only five dollars extra. Dig up as much extra money as you can and pay that on it. Then, when it's paid off, use that money plus the money you're already paying toward the next most expensive debt and knock that one out. Continue to do this and it will snowball until you've paid off more and faster than you thought possible.

Step Three: The third level of independence is called financial independence. It's when you no longer have to work to supply your daily needs and wants. Traditionally, this comes at retirement. You can make it happen while you are young enough to enjoy it. There are frugal people who have done just that.

As soon as you are out of debt, start putting that money into savings. Invest it carefully and keep adding to it. You'll be amazed at how fast it adds up. Open a savings account for short term emergency savings. If and when you have extra there, put it in your "Financial Independence" account.

  • Don't try to save so much that you ignore today's needs.

  • Don't forget to write down your goal. Write an essay on why you want to be financially independent and reread it now and then.

  • Don't hum haw around about putting money in the account. Set a specific amount and do it, every month or payday, without fail.

  • Do imagine yourself free from having to work at all.

  • Do continue to research and learn new ways to save on everyday things.

How long it will take depends on how far you're in debt and how committed you are. Age and income have less to do with it than those two things.

Being committed to doing it is the more important of those two. Without it, you're just playing games. With it... the sky's the limit.
